  • What happens to the hair that is swept through the trap door in the floor?

The cut hair that we sweep through the trap door feeds the infamous Freddy’s Hair Monster. We have never seen him, but we hear his name is Mortimer and we do our best to keep him well fed.

The Freddy Veri Story

This piece was written for this website by Robert Veri, with assistance from Vittoria Aimola-Veri and Ed Veri.

Master barber Fernando “Freddy” Verì (pronounced vair-EE) an emigrant from Abruzzo, Italy arrived in Guelph in the early nineteen-fifties, age 14. After extended stints at the Acton leather tannery and  Knight’s Lumber yard, he decided that of the two trades largely associated with Italian immigrant labour— construction and barbering— barbering might be the way to go as barbering left you much cleaner and better smelling at the end of the day, as well as being  warmer to practice in the winter months.

A 1959 graduate of the Bondy Barber School of Toronto, Freddy had a chair alongside Owner Teddy De Corso at Teddy’s Barber Shop Eramosa Road. Teddy would leave barbering to open the Victoria Road Golf Course and turned the keys over to Freddy in 1962.

During an extended stay in Europe the same year, Freddy observed the rising tide of long, pomade-free men’s hair fashions. He took the hairstylist course and recruited like-minded “stylists” to popularize men’s hairstyling in Guelph. A year later in January 1964, the Beatles ushered in the British Invasion and long hair on men. If you wanted a Beatle Hair Style in 1964 in Guelph: you went to Freddy’s, or your mom’s hairdresser. For the next 50 years, Freddy’s would remain one of the top barber shops in the Royal City.

The Masters at Freddy’s built up a regional reputation.  Masters like Benny Carbone, Pino Strongoli, Frank Moretti, and Eddy Veri turned Freddy’s into a Guelph institution over the next half a century. The salon moved from several locations along Eramosa Road— the street that has been home to Freddy’s since its inception— until the early seventies. Vittoria Aimola-Verì— Freddy’s spouse—spotted the location opportunity of a lifetime. Derelict and decrepit, the Bullfrog Inn. Guelph’s first Inn, built many years before Confederation in 1867, was up for sale. Heritage building conservation was not highly regarded at the time, and developers encouraged the demolition of anything over 100 years old for the sake of the construction economy. Vittoria was determined to save the grand grey stone building. Following a clash with the city of Guelph over zoning, the Provincial government overturned the City of Guelph’s refusal to change the zoning of the building and allow for the Bullfrog Inn’s restoration, and to become the home of Freddy’s, where we have been ever since.
